Duties and Responsibilities (* Denotes Essential Functions)

• • Setup, configure, and maintain network and server equipment, including but not limited to routers, firewalls, Ethernet switches, uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), and virtualized server systems.
• • Serve as lead network engineer for Honolulu Community College (HonCC) campus and data center infrastructure.
• • Serve as the lead HonCC campus network architect in collaboration with Information Technology (IT) Management and University of Hawai’i (UH) System Network staff.
• • Responsible for the full range of network needs and requirements, which includes but is not limited to the installation, configuration, and maintenance of networking equipment and related server hardware as well as additions or modifications to the suite of network services and resources for long-term scalability, security, and efficient management.
• • Collaborate with other network engineers across the UH System.
• • Collaborate with HonCC Information Technology Services (ITS) System and Support Engineers as part of the HonCC ITS team.
• • Follows and implements directives and guidance related to best practices from University of Hawai’i System Information Technology Services.
• • Ensures the consistent adoption, implementation, and enforcement of recommendations issued through University of Hawai’i System Information Technology Services.
• • Keeps abreast of recommendations issued through University of Hawai’i System Information Technology Services and takes timely action as needed.
• • Continuously monitor and lead initiatives to enhance system reliability, security, and operational efficiency. Supervise and mentor IT staff to assure that administrative directives and industry best practices are understood and followed.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Information & Computer Sciences, Computing Engineering, Computer Network, Information Technology, Network Administration, or Computer Security and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for Network or Server Support, of which two (2) years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower pay band in the University of Hawai’i broadband system; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

• Considerable working knowledge of networking, switching, routing and security hardware and operating systems as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles and methodologies.

• Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with programming and scripting languages.

• Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluate, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner.

• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

• If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

• Experience with router, switching, and security systems administration.

• Ability to set up and maintain both local and wide area networks.

• Ability to prepare clear, detailed documentation and network diagrams.

• Ability to plan, layout and direct the work of professional and technical subordinates

• Proven ability to comprehend, interpret and implement administrative directives and guidance to ensure IT operations align with organizational standards and industry best practices.

• Strong understanding of IT service management, cybersecurity principles, risk management, and compliance requirements. Demonstrated experience implementing and maintaining IT best practices, standards, and governance.

Desirable Qualifications

• Vendor certification in the administration of FortiNet, Cisco, Dell, Aruba network equipment.

• Vendor certification for virtual environments such as VMWare, Microsoft Virtual Desktops.

• Experience with Linux hardware and software operations.

• Experience with the networking and administration of Windows, Mac, Linux computer systems.

• Working knowledge of programming and scripting languages such as Python, PHP, JavaScript Perl, Bash, and Powershell.

• Ability to setup and maintain cloud based networking and virtual services using Azure, Google, and AWS.

• Working knowledge of DevOps tools such as ansible, docker, kubernetes, chef, terraform, Jenkins, and GitHub.

• Ability to work with various types of cabling and perform good cabling techniques.
