The librarian will maintain a modern trade-school library including print and digital collections, technical manuals, audiovisual media, and subscription databases. Additionally, the librarian will partner with faculty to support curriculum, workforce-readiness, and student success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day library operations: circulation, reserves, lending policies, room scheduling, and patron services for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Maintain and develop collections relevant to automotive, diesel, and other skilled trades: acquisitions, cataloging/classification (MARC/RDA or equivalent), labeling, physical processing, and deaccessioning.
  • Oversee digital resources: e-books, databases, online manuals, and vendor relationships; ensure accessibility and up-to-date licensing.
  • Provide research, reference, and information literacy support to students and faculty; teach short workshops or one-on-one sessions on research skills, citation, technical documentation use, and digital tools.
  • Collaborate with faculty to align library resources with course curricula, program outcomes, and accreditation requirements, support course material lists and reserve copies.
  • Conduct regular inventory, asset tracking, and condition assessments of library materials and equipment; manage repair, replacement, and loss procedures.
  • Maintain an integrated library system (ILS) / catalog and generate usage and circulation reports to inform purchasing and budgeting.
  • Manage library budget within guidelines; prepare purchase orders and recommend acquisitions based on needs and trends in the trades.
  • Ensure compliance with copyright, fair use, and licensing; provide guidance on reproduction and distribution of technical materials.
  • Supervise student workers or part-time library assistants; set schedules and provide training.
  • Support campus events, orientations, and outreach to promote library services and resources.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, safety protocols, and recordkeeping relevant to an educational training environment.

Qualifications Required

  • Master's degree in library science, education, information science, or a related field; OR bachelor’s degree plus 2+ years of progressively responsible library experience in an educational or technical setting.
  • Familiarity with trade/technical collections (automotive, diesel, aviation, HVAC, welding) or demonstrated ability to learn technical content quickly.
  • Experience with cataloging, collection development, and integrated library systems (ILS) or library management software.
  • Strong customer-service orientation; experience supporting diverse student populations, including adult learners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work on-site and manage physical materials handling (shelving, shelving maintenance, occasional lifting up to ~25 lbs.).

Preferred

  • Master’s in library and information science (MLIS) or equivalent.
  • Experience in a postsecondary career-technical or vocational training environment.
  • Familiarity with electronic resource management, e-book platforms, and technical/manual databases.
  • Experience with instruction or training delivery and creating instructional guides/tutorials.

Conditions

  • In-person role, typical campus hours with occasional evening or weekend events.

  • Routine physical tasks: shelving, moving boxes, and managing equipment.
